When a wave reaches a boundary (a point where the medium changes), three things happen: part of the wave is transmitted into the new medium, part is reflected back into the original medium, and part of the wave's energy is absorbed.
In reality, part of the pulse's energy is transmitted into the new medium, so the reflected pulse has a smaller amplitude (less energy) than the original — but its speed stays the same as the incident pulse's speed, because speed depends on the medium, and the reflected pulse is still in the original medium.
When two or more waves overlap in the same medium at the same time, this is called wave interference. Two basic properties apply here:
When two waves moving the same direction are "in phase" (crest meets crest), their sum gives double the amplitude — this is constructive interference. When they are out of phase (crest meets trough), one may cancel the other partially or completely — this is destructive interference.
When two waves travel in the same medium but in opposite directions with the same wavelength, a special interference pattern called a standing wave results — named so because it does not travel in the direction of either original wave. Some of its points don't move at all, called nodes, while others pass through maximum displacement, called antinodes.
Think of a pebble dropped in a pond: water is pushed down then springs back up, radiating concentric circles outward. The white lines represent the "wavefront" and the black lines represent the trough; each ring is a set of points reached by the vibration at the same time. The distance between two consecutive wavefronts (or two consecutive troughs) is the wavelength, and the wave always propagates in all directions perpendicular to its wavefront.
When a mechanical wave hits a barrier or reaches the end of its medium, part of it reflects at an angle equal to the angle of incidence (as happens when water waves bounce off the side of a pond). This is the law of reflection: angle of incidence = angle of reflection, measured from the normal to the surface.
Wave refraction: the bending of a wave as it passes from one medium to another at a non-perpendicular angle to the boundary. When a light ray passes from air into water, since water's index of refraction is higher, the light's speed decreases there, and the ray bends toward the normal (the refraction angle is smaller than the incidence angle). When moving from a higher-index medium to a lower one (like water to air), the speed increases and the ray bends away from the normal.
