🌊 What is the Doppler Effect?

The effect was discovered by Austrian scientist Christian Doppler in 1842. The Doppler effect is an apparent change in the frequency or wavelength of a wave when its source moves relative to an observer (or the observer moves relative to the source). It's observed in sound waves and electromagnetic waves (like light). Classic example: the change in an ambulance siren's pitch as it passes near you.

When a sound wave's source moves relative to an observer, a shift occurs in the apparent frequency they hear — observe the following animation:

Doppler effect (sound source moving slower than the speed of sound)

Notice how the sound waves bunch up ahead of the source and stretch out behind it; more crests reach the ear of the observer ahead each second. So the observer ahead of the source perceives a higher frequency, while the one behind perceives a lower frequency. A similar shift occurs if the source is stationary and the observer moves: approaching the source is perceived as a higher frequency, moving away as a lower one.

Sound source moving at the speed of sound

As the source's speed approaches the speed of sound, the wavelengths ahead of it approach zero. The waves pile up on each other forming a large region of constructive interference — and if this region reaches the observer's ear, a boom sound is heard.

Sound source moving faster than the speed of sound

When the source travels faster than sound, a cone of constructive interference trails behind it, and the moment this cone's edge crosses the observer's path, a loud "sonic boom" is heard. This boom is not the moment of breaking the sound barrier itself, but the result of the continuous shock wave trailing behind the source.

📐 Basic Equations

The Doppler equation differs depending on the motion of the source and observer (the sign of \(v_d\) for the observer and \(v_s\) for the source depends on the direction of motion):

Observer moving away from source
Stationary source\(f_d=f_s\)\(f_d=f_s\dfrac{v+v_d}{v}\)\(f_d=f_s\dfrac{v-v_d}{v}\)
Source moving toward observer\(f_d=f_s\dfrac{v}{v-v_s}\)\(f_d=f_s\dfrac{v+v_d}{v-v_s}\)\(f_d=f_s\dfrac{v-v_d}{v-v_s}\)
Source moving away from observer\(f_d=f_s\dfrac{v}{v+v_s}\)\(f_d=f_s\dfrac{v+v_d}{v+v_s}\)\(f_d=f_s\dfrac{v-v_d}{v+v_s}\)
⚠️ \(f_s\): تردد المصدر، \(f_d\): التردد الظاهري الذي يسمعه المراقب، \(v\): سرعة الصوت، \(v_s\): سرعة المصدر، \(v_d\): سرعة المراقب.⚠️ \(f_s\): source frequency, \(f_d\): apparent frequency heard by the observer, \(v\): speed of sound, \(v_s\): source speed, \(v_d\): observer speed.
