🔗
Have you ever broken an ornamental piece and repaired it? You surely searched carefully for every broken fragment and glued them back together. Repairing a damaged ecosystem is not very different: scientists carefully look for every part of the ecosystem, repair the damage, and secure the site so that it is protected from future harm.
Warm-up activity: Save the ecosystem!
We will return to this activity at the end of the lesson, once you know the tools available. For now, notice that each threat needs a different solution.
Question 1
The main goal of the methods people use in this lesson is:
Increasing resource consumption
Slowing the extinction rate and conserving biodiversity
Building more roads
Increasing pesticide use
This is the main idea of the lesson.
Question 2
In this lesson, repairing a damaged ecosystem is compared to:
Repairing a broken ornamental piece
Building a new city
Extracting oil
Hunting animals
Scientists search for every part of the ecosystem and repair it carefully.
2. How Biodiversity Is Distributed: Reading the Map
تُظهر خريطة الكتاب عدد الفصائل بالألوان: من البنفسجي والأزرق (الأقل) إلى الأحمر والأسود (الأكثر).How is the biodiversity of passerine birds distributed across the Americas? Birds are not spread evenly, just like other species: passerine birds concentrate in some parts of the Americas and not others. The map in the book shows the number of species by color: from purple and blue (fewest) to red and black (most).
Activity: a journey from north to south
حرّك المؤشر من كندا إلى الطرف الجنوبي لأمريكا الجنوبية، ولاحظ تغيّر تنوع الطيور (القيم نسبية مأخوذة من ألوان الخريطة).Move the slider from Canada to the southern tip of South America and watch how bird diversity changes (values are relative, taken from the map colors).
Critical Thinking
Identify the location with the largest concentration of passerine birds.
The northern half of South America (the Amazon basin) and Central America, i.e., the areas close to the equator.
Generalize the general pattern of passerine bird numbers as we move from Canada to South America.
Bird diversity increases as we move south from Canada toward the equator; in other words, diversity decreases as we move away from the equator toward the poles.
Infer the reason for the change in passerine bird numbers as we move toward the southern tip of South America.
(تختلف الإجابات، والمهم ذكر عامل منطقي.)The number of birds decreases toward the southern tip because of abiotic factors such as lower temperatures and a shorter growing season, and biotic factors such as less food (plants and insects) and less habitat variety. (Answers may vary; what matters is giving a logical factor.)
Question 1

Biodiversity increases toward the equator.
Question 3
One reason for fewer birds at the southern tip of South America is:
High temperatures
Low temperatures and little food
Many rainforests
Its proximity to the equator
Abiotic and biotic factors limit diversity.
3. Natural Resources and Sustainable Use
The biosphere currently provides the basic needs of more than six billion people in the form of natural resources. The human population keeps growing, but this growth is not evenly distributed around the world, and it leads to a growing need for the natural resources that provide basic needs.
Resource consumption is not evenly distributed either: people in developed countries consume far more than people in developing countries. As industry develops and living standards rise in developing countries, their consumption grows too. Therefore, it has become important to prepare a long-term plan that regulates the use of natural resources and ensures their conservation.

⛽
Resources that exist in limited amounts or are replaced by natural processes that take very long periods, such as fossil fuels (oil and coal) and minerals. Extinct species are also a non-renewable resource, because they never come back.
🌱
It means using resources at a rate that allows them to be replenished or recycled, while maintaining the environmental health of the ecosystem over the long term. Example: cutting trees from a managed forest and replanting them, or the traditional aflaj irrigation channels of the UAE, which distributed water to farms without waste.
🧪 Activity 2: Renewable or non-renewable?

Which of the following is a non-renewable resource?
Solar energy
Crops
النفطOil

Oil takes millions of years to form.
Using resources at a rate that allows them to be replenished is called:
Sustainable use
Overexploitation
Extinction
Pollution
Sustainable use preserves the resource for future generations.
According to Figure 16, per-person consumption of natural resources is highest in:
Developing countries
Developed countries
All countries equally
Desert countries only
A person in developed countries consumes many times more than in developing countries.
4. Protecting Biodiversity: Reserves and Laws
Ecosystems in many regions are affected by human activity, so intensive efforts are made worldwide to reduce the loss of biodiversity and to achieve the sustainable use of natural resources.

The UAE plays a major role in protecting environmental balance by focusing on natural reserves. Efforts were recognized early, and caring for wildlife and marine life became one of the first local issues. Over the past three decades this has appeared in the creation of many terrestrial and marine reserves, the drafting of plans and programs to protect endangered species, and the issuing of laws aimed at protecting the environment. Examples include Sir Bani Yas Island and Ras Al Khor Wildlife Sanctuary, among many others.
🌐
Not only the UAE has created parks and natural reserves: about seven percent of the land worldwide has been set aside as natural reserves. Most of them, however, have historically been a small part of a habitat surrounded by areas where human activity takes place. The United Nations supports the "Biosphere Reserves" and "World Heritage Sites" systems. Costa Rica has created vast natural reserves that include a protected core surrounded by buffer zones where sustainable use of resources is allowed, so biodiversity is conserved while resources are provided to local communities.
Experiment: one large reserve or several small ones?
The total area of the reserve is fixed, but you can split it into pieces. The edges of the reserve (yellow) are affected by noise, pollution and invasive species, while the core zone (dark green) is the safe habitat.

Legal protection of biodiversity
(CITES).During the 1970s, governments became increasingly concerned about environmental degradation and the conservation of biodiversity. In the United States, several environmental laws were passed, including the Endangered Species Act, which prohibits hunting, killing, selling or trading species listed under it. An international agreement to limit the illegal trade in endangered species was also adopted: the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES).

5. Biodiversity Hotspots and Corridors Between Habitat Patches
Conservation biologists have identified places around the world with exceptional numbers of endemic species (species that live only in one specific geographic area), as well as places where habitat loss has reached dangerous levels.
🔥
For an area to be classified as a hotspot, two criteria must be met:
It must contain at least 1500 species of endemic vascular plants.
It must have lost at least 70% of its original habitat.
Figure 19 shows the internationally recognized hotspots, which number 34.
≈ 50%من أنواع النباتات والحيواناتof plant and animal species
17%من سطح اليابسة (أصلًا)of the land surface (originally)
1/10فقط بقي من هذا الموطنof that habitat remains
Some biologists believe that focusing effort on a limited area will save the largest possible number of species, while others argue that this focus does not address serious problems elsewhere, such as wetlands, which provide greater services like water filtration, flood regulation and shelter for fish. They therefore believe funding should be spread across different areas around the world.
Activity 1: Is this area a hotspot?
Move the two sliders to describe an area; the system will judge it by the two criteria.
Corridors between habitat patches
Conservation biologists also focus on improving the survival of biodiversity by providing corridors or passages between habitat patches, like those shown in Figure 20, to connect smaller pieces of land. These corridors let living things move safely from one area to another, effectively creating a larger piece of land that can hold a bigger set of species and genetic diversity.
⚠️
Corridors do not completely solve the problem of habitat destruction: diseases spread easily from one area to a neighboring one as infected animals move, and this approach increases the edge effect. It is also worth noting that a large habitat has fewer edges, but it is often difficult to maintain.
Experiment: build a wildlife bridge

For an area to be a hotspot, it must contain at least this many endemic vascular plants:
150 species
1500 species
15,000 species
50 species
The first criterion: at least 1500 endemic species.
The second criterion is that the area has lost this share of its original habitat:
At least 10%
At least 30%
At least 70%
100%100%
It must have lost at least 70%.
One drawback of corridors between habitat patches is:
They prevent animal movement
They make disease spread easier and increase the edge effect
They reduce genetic diversity
They increase roadkill
Infected animals can move easily through corridors.
6. Repairing Ecosystems
Sometimes biodiversity in an area is destroyed to the point that the abiotic and biotic factors needed for a healthy ecosystem disappear. For example, the soil of a tropical rainforest whose trees have been cut becomes unsuitable for farming after a few years, and oil spills or leaks of toxic chemicals can pollute an area so badly that native species can no longer live there.
Biological communities can recover from natural disasters and human-made ones over time. The size of the affected area and the type of disturbance determine how long recovery takes: the larger the affected area, the longer the community needs to recover. Scientists use two methods to speed up recovery: bioremediation and biological augmentation.

Bioremediation
Bioremediation is the process of using living organisms such as bacteria, fungi or plants to remove toxins from a polluted area. In 1975, a leak from a fuel storage facility in South Carolina released about 80,000 gallons of kerosene-based jet fuel. The sandy soil absorbed the fuel, which polluted the groundwater. Then the microorganisms naturally present in the soil broke the fuel down into carbon dioxide. Scientists discovered that by adding nutrients to the soil, the microorganisms clean the area faster, and within a few years the level of pollution dropped considerably.
Some plant species are also used to remove toxic chemicals such as zinc, lead, nickel and organic compounds from damaged soil (Figure 22). They are planted in the polluted soil, store the toxic metals in their tissues, and are then harvested, removing the metals from the ecosystem.

Biological augmentation
Biological augmentation is the process of adding natural predators to a damaged ecosystem. For example, ladybugs feed on aphids, which damage crops and houseplants (Figure 23). Farmers can use these ladybugs to get rid of harmful insects instead of insecticides. Biological augmentation can also be used to boost other processes, such as adding microorganisms that break down toxic chemicals.

Understanding the main ideas
Describe three approaches used to slow the extinction rate or to conserve biodiversity.
Creating natural reserves: protecting areas from human activity, with buffer zones for sustainable use.
Focusing on biodiversity hotspots: protecting areas rich in endemic and threatened species.
Creating corridors between habitat patches: connecting small areas so organisms can move safely and genetic diversity increases.
إصلاح الأنظمة البيئية: بالمعالجة البيولوجية (كائنات تزيل السموم) والتعزيز البيولوجي (إضافة مفترسات طبيعية).Repairing ecosystems: through bioremediation (organisms that remove toxins) and biological augmentation (adding natural predators).
CITES.Legal protection: such as the Endangered Species Act and CITES.
Sustainable use of natural resources.
Identify two natural resources.
Examples: water and trees (timber), which are renewable resources, or oil and minerals, which are non-renewable resources. (Other examples such as air, soil, solar energy and coal are accepted.)
Choose a human-caused disaster from Figure 21, and discuss the methods that can be used to restore biodiversity.
Example: oil spill
Bioremediation: using bacteria and fungi that break down oil into carbon dioxide and water, with added nutrients to speed up their work.
Biological augmentation: adding oil-degrading microorganisms if they are not present in sufficient numbers.
Reintroducing native species after the area is cleaned, and protecting it legally to prevent pollution from recurring.
Another example: mining → planting species that absorb toxic metals (zinc, lead and nickel), then harvesting them, then reforesting with native plants.
Compare the advantages and disadvantages of large and small natural reserves.
Vast reserves
Small reserves
Advantages
Protect more species and larger populations; relatively fewer edges; support large animals and predators.
Easier and cheaper to create and manage; can be spread out to cover different habitats; disease does not spread through all of them at once.
Disadvantages
Expensive and hard to maintain and manage; may conflict with local people's need for land and resources.
Protect fewer species; the edge effect is stronger; populations are small and isolated, so they are more vulnerable to extinction.
Critical thinking
Create a dialogue between a conservation specialist and a person living in a biodiversity hotspot who wants to use natural resources to provide for their family. The dialogue should include a compromise that satisfies both sides.
Farmer: I need to cut these trees to plant new land and feed my family.
👩🔬 الاختصاصية: أفهم ذلك، لكن هذه الغابة موطن لأنواع لا توجد في أي مكان آخر في العالم، وإذا قُطعت فستنقرض.👩🔬 Specialist: I understand, but this forest is home to species that exist nowhere else in the world, and if it is cut, they will go extinct.
Farmer: Then what should I do? I have no other source of income.
الجزء الداخلي يبقى محمية لا تُقطع، والمنطقة العازلة حوله يمكنك أن تجمع منها الثمار والعسل والنباتات الطبية، وتقطع منها عددًا محدودًا من الأشجار مع زراعة غيرها.👩🔬 Specialist: What do you think about dividing the land? The inner part stays a reserve that is not cut, and in the buffer zone around it you can gather fruit, honey and medicinal plants, and cut a limited number of trees while planting others.
👨🌾 Farmer: Will this income be enough?
👩🔬 الاختصاصية: يمكنك أيضًا العمل مرشدًا في السياحة البيئية؛ فالزوار يأتون لرؤية هذه الأنواع النادرة، وسيدرّ ذلك دخلًا دائمًا ما دامت الغابة سليمة.👩🔬 Specialist: You can also work as a guide in ecotourism; visitors come to see these rare species, which will provide a steady income as long as the forest stays healthy.
Farmer: If that also secures my children's livelihood in the future, I agree.
The compromise: a core reserve + a buffer zone for sustainable use + ecotourism.
