🤝 Newton’s Third Law
Newton’s third law states that if a body A exerts a force on a body B then B exerts on A a force equal in magnitude and opposite in direction. We call one of the two forces the action and the other the reaction. The two forces appear together and vanish together, they are of the same kind, and they act on two different bodies.
Since the two forces act on two different bodies they cannot be added to find a net force on one body. Each body has its own acceleration \(a=\dfrac{\sum F}{m}\): the lighter body gets the greater acceleration.
💡 Examples of action–reaction pairs
A book on a table: the book presses the table downward (action) and the table pushes the book upward (reaction). (The weight of the book and the force of the table are not an action–reaction pair because they act on the same body.)
A truck hitting a wall: the truck exerts a force on the wall and the wall exerts an equal opposite force on it.
The Earth and the Moon: the Earth attracts the Moon and the Moon attracts the Earth with the same force.
A box hung from a rope: the rope pulls the box up and the box pulls the rope down.
🧪 Experiment 1: Discover the action–reaction pairs
Choose a situation (a book on a table, a truck and a wall, the Earth and the Moon, a box hung from a rope). The first arrow (the action) appears; press “Show the reaction” to show the opposite force: equal in magnitude, opposite in direction and acting on the other body. Change the mass or the force to see that the two values always change together. Nothing moves by itself.

🧪 Experiment 2: Two carts push each other: equal forces, different accelerations
Two carts at rest with a compressed spring between them. When released each cart exerts on the other a force \(F\) for a time \(\tau\). Set the masses and the force then press “Release the spring” (or move the time slider). Notice that the two forces are equal but the lighter cart gets the greater acceleration and velocity, and that \(m_Av_A=m_Bv_B\).

A book of mass \(2\ \mathrm{kg}\) rests on a table (\(g=9.8\ \mathrm{m/s^2}\)). What force does the table exert on the book? What is its reaction?
Solution
\(N=mg=2\times9.8=19.6\ \mathrm{N}\ (\text{up, on the book})\)
The reaction: the force of the book on the table \(19.6\ \mathrm{N}\) downward (on the table).
✅ \(19.6\ \mathrm{N}\) upward, and its reaction \(19.6\ \mathrm{N}\) downward
Two carts \(m_A=2\ \mathrm{kg}\) and \(m_B=4\ \mathrm{kg}\) at rest push each other with \(12\ \mathrm{N}\) for \(0.5\ \mathrm{s}\). Calculate the acceleration of each and its final velocity.
The force between the Earth and the Moon is \(1.98\times10^{20}\ \mathrm{N}\). Compare their accelerations (\(m_{moon}=7.35\times10^{22}\ \mathrm{kg}\) and \(m_{earth}=5.97\times10^{24}\ \mathrm{kg}\)).
✅ the forces are equal but the Moon’s acceleration is about 81 times greater
If the action and reaction forces are equal how does the horse move the cart?
Solution
The two forces between the horse and the cart act on different bodies so they do not cancel. The system moves when the forward friction of the ground on the horse’s hooves is greater than the backward friction on the cart.
✅ because the two forces act on different bodies

The Earth attracts the Moon with a force \(F\). The Moon attracts the Earth with a force:
\(a=\dfrac{F}{m}\ (\text{different for each})\)\(a=\dfrac{F}{m}\ (\text{different for each})\)
⚠️ Common mistakes
Taking the weight and the force of the table as an action–reaction pair; they are on the same body.
Thinking that equal forces mean equal accelerations; the acceleration depends on the mass.
Adding the action and reaction forces to get zero net force; this is not allowed because they act on two bodies.
