🌡️ Gay-Lussac’s Law

Gay-Lussac’s law (of pressure and temperature): at constant volume the pressure of a given amount of gas is directly proportional to its absolute temperature (in kelvin). That is, if we double the absolute temperature the pressure doubles.

📌 The law

\[\frac{P}{T}=k\qquad,\qquad \frac{P_1}{T_1}=\frac{P_2}{T_2}\qquad,\qquad P_2=P_1\frac{T_2}{T_1}\]

Important facts

🧩 Why Does the Pressure Increase When Heated?

According to the kinetic theory a gas consists of molecules in constant random motion, and the pressure results from their collisions with the walls of the container. Raising the temperature increases the average kinetic energy of the molecules so they become faster and hit the walls more often and with a larger force in every collision; since the volume is constant the pressure increases. Lowering the temperature does the opposite.

📌 The general relation (ideal gas)

\[PV=nRT\ \Rightarrow\ P=\left(\frac{nR}{V}\right)T\ ,\quad R=8.314\ \mathrm{J/(mol\cdot K)}\]

When \(V\) and \(n\) are constant the quantity \(nR/V\) is constant and it is the slope of the graph of \(P\) against \(T\). So a larger amount of gas gives a larger slope.

🧪 Pressure and Temperature in a Rigid Container

This experiment simulates the GeoGebra applet “Gay-Lussac’s law”: a gas in a container, a pressure gauge that moves when the temperature is raised, and a graph of \(P\) against \(T\).

🛠️ Procedure

  1. اضبط \(T=300\ \mathrm K\) و\(n=0.4\ \mathrm{mol}\) وسجّل \(P\) (نحو \(100\ \mathrm{kPa}\)).Set \(T=300\ \mathrm K\) and \(n=0.4\ \mathrm{mol}\) and record \(P\) (about \(100\ \mathrm{kPa}\)).
Raise \(T\) step by step and record \(P\) and \(P/T\) each time.
Press “Move the molecules” and notice the speed of the molecules at a low and then at a high temperature.
Change \(n\) and watch the slope of the line.

🧪 Experiment 1: Gas in a Rigid Container: Pressure and Temperature (like the GeoGebra applet)

A gas is trapped in a rigid container of constant volume. Raise the temperature \(T\) in kelvin and watch the pressure gauge \(P\) and the graph. Change the amount of the gas \(n\) to see its effect on the slope.

⚖️ Comparing Two States

In problems we know a first state \((P_1,T_1)\) and want the pressure \(P_2\) at \(T_2\) (or the opposite). We write \(\dfrac{P_1}{T_1}=\dfrac{P_2}{T_2}\) provided that both temperatures are in kelvin, the two pressures are in the same unit and the volume is constant.

🛠️ Procedure

  1. ثبّت \(P_1\) و\(T_1\) ثم اجعل \(T_2=2T_1\) وراقب \(P_2\).Fix \(P_1\) and \(T_1\) then make \(T_2=2T_1\) and watch \(P_2\).
Make \(T_2\lt T_1\) (cooling) and notice that the pressure decreases.
Calculate \(P_2\) yourself and enter the result in “Test yourself”.

❄️ Absolute Zero

If we plot the pressure against the temperature in Celsius we get a straight line that does not pass through the origin, but if it is extended it cuts the temperature axis at \(-273.15\ ^\circ\mathrm C\) where the pressure vanishes. That is the lowest temperature theoretically possible: absolute zero \(0\ \mathrm K\), from which the kelvin scale starts.

🛠️ Procedure

  1. اختر درجة حرارة بالسيلسيوس واضغط «سجّل القياس» (كرّر لأربع درجات على الأقل ومدى \(100\ ^\circ\mathrm C\)).Choose a temperature in Celsius and press “Record the measurement” (repeat for at least four temperatures with a range of \(100\ ^\circ\mathrm C\)).
(P=0\).Watch the line that passes through the points and its dotted extension up to \(P=0\).
Read its intersection with the \(t\) axis and enter it in “Test yourself”.

🧪 Experiment 3: Estimating Absolute Zero from Pressure Measurements

We measure the pressure of a gas of constant volume at several temperatures in Celsius, then extend the straight line to \(P=0\) to find the temperature at which the pressure vanishes, which is absolute zero.
