(Dielectric)
Capacitors are electronic components that store electrical energy in a temporary electric field. They mainly consist of:
Two conductive plates (usually metal)
An insulating material between them called Dielectric
How do they work?
When connecting a capacitor to a current source: 1. Electric charges accumulate on the plates 2. Energy is stored in the electric field between the plates 3. This energy can be discharged when needed
Common Uses:
Smoothing electrical signals
Filtering frequencies in circuits
Temporary energy storage (like camera flashes)
Timing circuits (with resistors)
Types of Capacitors:
Ceramic capacitors (small size)
Electrolytic capacitors (polarized - high capacity)
Tantalum capacitors (better performance than electrolytic)
Variable capacitors (adjustable capacity)
Important Terms:
Capacitance
Measured in Farads (F) - indicates storage capacity
Voltage Rating
Maximum voltage that can be applied to the capacitor
Tolerance
Percentage deviation from nominal capacity
Capacitance Equation:
\[ C = \varepsilon_0 \varepsilon_r \frac{A}{d} \]
Where: \(\varepsilon_0\) = Permittivity of vacuum (\(8.854 \times 10^{-12} \, \text{F/m}\)), \(\varepsilon_r\) = Relative permittivity of the dielectric (dimensionless), \(A\) = Plate area (m²), \(d\) = Distance between plates (m)
Note: Capacitance is directly proportional to plate area and permittivity, and inversely proportional to the distance between plates.

✵ Series Connection
When capacitors are connected in series, the first plate of one capacitor is connected to the second plate of the next capacitor.
Total capacitance in series is always less than the smallest capacitance in the circuit.
This type of connection is used to withstand high electrical voltages.

✵ Parallel Connection
When capacitors are connected in parallel, all first plates are connected together to one terminal of the battery, and all second plates to the other terminal.
