\[ \frac{1}{R_{total}} = \frac{1}{R_1} + \frac{1}{R_2} + \cdots + \frac{1}{R_n} \]
\[ I_{total} = I_1 + I_2 + \cdots + I_n \]
\[ V_{total} = V_1 = V_2 = \cdots = V_n \]
(Uninterruptible Power Supply)
\[ R_{total} = \frac{1}{\frac{1}{6}+\frac{1}{3}} = 2\,\Omega \]
\[ R_{eq} = \left(\frac{1}{R_1}+\frac{1}{R_2}\right)^{-1} \]
\[ P = \frac{V^2}{R} \]
P₁ = V² / R₁
P₂ = V² / R₂
⚡ Connection Method
Resistors are connected in parallel when all their terminals are joined at two common connection points, allowing different currents to flow through each resistor while the voltage stays the same across all resistors.
A parallel connection is one where resistors are joined such that there is more than one path for current to flow through — the ends of the resistors on both sides connect to one shared node.
📜 Basic Equations
Total Resistance:
\[ \frac{1}{R_{total}} = \frac{1}{R_1} + \frac{1}{R_2} + \cdots + \frac{1}{R_n} \]
Total Current:
\[ I_{total} = I_1 + I_2 + \cdots + I_n \]
Voltage:
\[ V_{total} = V_1 = V_2 = \cdots = V_n \]
🎯 Purpose of a Parallel Connection
- Reduces the circuit's total resistance (the total resistance is smaller than the smallest individual resistor), used to obtain an equivalent resistance not otherwise available
- Ensures devices keep working even if one fails (as in home wiring) — if one parallel-connected device fails, current keeps flowing through the others
- Distributes current across different paths, allowing each device to operate independently or all together
💡 Practical Applications
- 🔌 Household electrical circuits (lamps, appliances)
- 🚗 Car lighting systems
- 🖥️ Power distribution circuits in electronic devices
- ⚡ Uninterruptible Power Supply (UPS) systems
Worked Example:
Connecting a 6Ω and a 3Ω resistor in parallel:
\[ R_{total} = \frac{1}{\frac{1}{6}+\frac{1}{3}} = 2\,\Omega \]
Equivalent Resistance
A parallel connection is used to obtain a smaller equivalent resistance than either resistor alone; for two resistors it's calculated as:
\[ R_{eq} = \left(\frac{1}{R_1}+\frac{1}{R_2}\right)^{-1} \]
Light Bulbs Connected in Parallel
Bulb Brightness
When two or more bulbs are connected in parallel to a voltage source (like a battery), the same voltage appears across each bulb regardless of differences in resistance. Brightness is determined by the electrical power each bulb consumes:
\[ P = \frac{V^2}{R} \]
The higher the power, the brighter the bulb; since voltage is fixed (equal to the source voltage), a larger resistance means lower brightness, because power and resistance are inversely related at constant voltage.
Calculating Each Bulb's Power
For two bulbs with different resistances R₁ and R₂, the power of each is:
- Power of bulb 1:
P₁ = V² / R₁
- Power of bulb 2:
P₂ = V² / R₂
The lower the resistance, the higher the power, and thus the brighter the bulb.
Purpose of Parallel Connection (Bulbs)
- Operate devices independently (if one bulb goes out, the others keep working)
- Maintain constant voltage across all devices
- Avoid increasing the total current in the circuit
Practical Applications
- Household lighting (each bulb operates at 220V)
- Electrical outlets in homes
- Electronic circuits that need a constant distributed voltage
Worked Example:
Connecting two bulbs in parallel to a 12V source, with resistances 6Ω and 12Ω:
- Power of bulb 1:
12² / 6 = 24 W (brighter)
- Power of bulb 2:
12² / 12 = 12 W (dimmer)
