قانون كولوم
القوة الكهربائية بين شحنتين نقطيتين تتناسب طرديًا مع حاصل ضرب مقدار الشحنتين وعكسيًا مع مربع المسافة بينهما:
\[F=K.\frac{q_1.q_2}{r^2}\]

I am Coulomb — I studied the mutual forces between electric charges and found that:
\(F \propto {q_1}{q_2}\) — Electric force is directly proportional to the product of the magnitudes of the two charges.
\(F \propto \frac{1}{{{r^2}}}\) — Electric force is inversely proportional to the square of the distance between them.
And the electric force changes with the medium, so I arrived at Coulomb's constant, whose value changes with the medium:
\(k=1/4\pi\epsilon_0\), where \(\epsilon_0 = 8.85\times{10^{-12}}\frac{{{{\rm{C}}^{\rm{2}}}}}{{{\rm{N}}{{\rm{m}}^{\rm{2}}}}}\)
Thus I arrived at the following relationship:
\[F = k\frac{{{q_1}{q_2}}}{{{r^2}}}\]
⚡ Simulation — Coulomb's Law and Graphs
In this simulation we verify the relationship between force and charge magnitude, and between force and distance. The first icon shows the relationship with distance, and the second shows the relationship with charge magnitude. Fix the charge magnitude and change the distance, observe the graph; then fix the distance and change one charge's magnitude and observe the graph. What do you conclude?
Coulomb's Law
The electric force between two point charges is directly proportional to the product of their magnitudes and inversely proportional to the square of the distance between them:
\[F=K.\frac{q_1.q_2}{r^2}\]
where k = Coulomb's constant \[ k ≈ 9×10⁹ N·m²/C²\]
Types of Electric Forces
1. Attractive Force
Occurs when the two charges are of opposite types (one positive and one negative). Example: attraction of electrons to the nucleus in an atom.
2. Repulsive Force
Occurs when the two charges are of the same type (both positive or both negative). Example: repulsion of two charges on two balloons charged with the same type.
Important Properties
Mutual force (equal in magnitude, opposite in direction)
Its intensity increases with increasing magnitude of one or both charges
Its intensity decreases with increasing distance between charges
Depends on the dielectric medium between the charges
Useful information: Mutual force between two charges
There are two types of electric force: attraction and repulsion.
Attractive force arises between different charges
Repulsive force arises between similar charges
Note: whatever the type of mutual force, its direction on the two charges is opposite, and the magnitude of the force the first exerts on the second equals the magnitude the second exerts on the first, but opposite in direction.
F₁₂ = −F₂₁
For every action there is an equal and opposite reaction (Newton's third law).

A
F₂₁=20 N to the right

q₁=q₂= 1.7×10⁻¹² C

Superposition of Electric Forces
In the figure below we have three electric charges
Determine the direction of the force acting on the first charge from the second charge and write the expression for it
If all three charges are equal in magnitude, what is the direction of the net force on the first charge?
Direction = ..........................................................
⚡ Simulation — Resultant Electric Force
In this simulation we place more than two charges next to each other on a straight line and determine the force acting on a charge and its direction.
Solved Example — Superposition
Three point charges are placed at the vertices of a right triangle as shown \[q_1= 2\;µc\;\;\;\;\;\;\;q_2=-3\;µc\;\;\;\;\;\;\;q_3=4\;µc\] and distances between charges are \[r_{12}=0.3\;m\;\;\;\;\;\;\;\;\;\; r_{13}=0.4\;m\]. Calculate the electric force on the first charge.
Solution:
\[Fe_{21}=K\frac {q_1.q_2}{r_{12}^2}=9×10^9×\frac {2×10^{-6}×3×10^{-6}}{0.3^2}=0.6 N \]
\[Fe_{31}=K\frac {q_1.q_3}{r_{13}^2}=9×10^9×\frac {2×10^{-6}×4×10^{-6}}{0.4^2}=0.45 N \]
\[F_{net}=\sqrt {Fe_{21}^2+Fe_{31}^2}=\sqrt {0.6^2+0.45^2}\approx 0.75 N \]

Practical Applications
🏭 Electrostatic Precipitators (Chimneys)
Electrostatic precipitators are used in factories to purify smoke and particles from industrial emissions. Exhaust gases pass through a chamber containing electrodes that charge suspended particles positively, so they are attracted to negatively charged collection plates where they adhere. Plates are cleaned periodically to remove accumulated particles. This technology is very effective, removing fine particles up to 99% in some applications.
🚗 Charging Paint Droplets — Car Painting
Static electricity is used in car painting to provide even coverage. Paint particles carry a positive charge while the car body carries a negative charge. Electrostatic attraction draws paint particles to all surfaces, even corners and hidden areas, reducing waste and giving more uniform coverage.
🖨️ Laser Printers
Laser printers rely on static electricity: a drum is charged uniformly, the laser removes charge from areas that should print, oppositely-charged toner sticks to the remaining charged areas, and the toner is transferred to paper and fused with heat.
📦 Food Packaging
Static electricity helps create airtight food seals: a charge applied to plastic wrap makes it adhere better to the product or to another layer, protecting food from spoilage and extending shelf life.
