(Electric Field)
\[ E = k\frac{Q}{r^2} = 8.99\times10^9 \times \frac{Q}{r^2} \]
\[ \Delta V = -E \times d \times \cos\theta \]
\[ \Delta V = -(50) \times 3 \times \cos(0°) = -150 \; V \]

Electric Field and Potential of Point Charges
Electric Field
Definition: the region of space around a charge in which electric forces appear on other charges.
\[ E = k\frac{Q}{r^2} = 8.99\times10^9 \times \frac{Q}{r^2} \]
Determining the Field Direction
There are two methods:
Method 1: place a test charge at the point in question. If the test charge is positive, the field direction matches the force direction; if negative, the field is opposite to the force.
Method 2: draw the field lines — field lines point outward from a positive charge and inward toward a negative charge.
Properties of the Electric Field
A vector quantity (has magnitude and direction)
Arises from any electric charge
Measured in N/C or V/m
Worked Example
A point charge \(Q = +5\,nC\). Find the electric field at a distance \(r = 0.3\,m\) from it.
Definition: the work required to move a unit of positive charge from infinity to the point in question.
\[ V = k\frac{Q}{r} = (8.99\times10^9) \times \frac{Q}{r} \]
Properties of Electric Potential
A scalar quantity (magnitude only)
Depends on the point's distance from the charge
Measured in volts (V)
Worked Example
For the same point charge \(Q = +5\,nC\), find the electric potential at a distance \(r = 0.3\,m\) from it.
\[ V = (8.99\times10^9) \times \frac{5\times10^{-9}}{0.3} = 149.83 \; V \]

Potential Due to Multiple Point Charges
The total potential at a point due to several charges is the algebraic sum of the potential from each charge individually (superposition principle), since potential is a scalar quantity:
Designing electronic circuits and electrostatic charge-storage systems
Analyzing charge distributions in capacitors
Studying electric fields in biological systems (e.g. an ECG device)
Lightning protection systems and electron beams in cathode ray tubes
Potential is a scalar quantity (not a vector) — easy to compute by direct summation. Positive charges produce positive potentials, negative charges produce negative potentials. Unit: volt (1 volt = 1 joule/coulomb).

Key Differences Between Potential and Field
The field is a vector, while the potential is a scalar quantity
The field depends on the inverse square of distance \(\left(\frac{1}{r^2}\right)\), while the potential depends on the simple inverse of distance \(\left(\frac{1}{r}\right)\)
The field is related to force, while the potential is related to energy
Uniform Electric Field and Potential
Uniform Electric Field
A uniform electric field is one that is constant in magnitude and direction between two charged parallel plates, calculated from the surface charge density.
\[ E = \frac{\sigma}{\varepsilon_0} \]
Affecting Factors
Surface charge density \((\sigma)\)
Electric permittivity of the medium \((\varepsilon)\)
Voltage applied between the plates
Properties of a Uniform Field
Field strength is constant in magnitude and direction
Field lines are parallel and evenly spaced
The force on a test charge is constant
Electric potential varies linearly with distance
Worked Example
Two parallel plates, each with area \(A = 2\,m^2\), carry a charge \(q = 8.85\times10^{-12}\,C\). Calculate the electric field strength.
A case where the electric field is constant in magnitude and direction, leading to a linear change in electric potential with distance.
\[ \Delta V = -E \times d \times \cos\theta \]
Where: \(\Delta V\) = potential difference (V), \(E\) = electric field strength (V/m), \(d\) = distance (m), \(\theta\) = the angle between the field direction and the direction of motion
Affecting Factors
Electric field strength \((E)\)
Distance traveled \((d)\)
Direction of motion relative to the field \((\theta)\)
Applied Example
If a uniform electric field has strength \(E = 50\,V/m\), and a charge is moved a distance of 3 meters parallel to the field, the potential difference is:
\[ \Delta V = -(50) \times 3 \times \cos(0°) = -150 \; V \]
Basic Properties
Linear change in potential with distance
The direction of steepest potential decrease matches the electric field direction
Equipotential surfaces are parallel and evenly spaced
The electric field is the negative spatial gradient of potential \((E = -\nabla V)\)
1. The negative sign reflects the direction of decreasing potential.
2. Potential increases when moving opposite to the field direction.
3. Moving perpendicular to the field \((\theta = 90°)\) does not change the potential.
