Particles of a hot (red) and a cold (blue) region: thermal energy transfers through collisions of the particles.
Energy flows from the hot body to the cold one until the temperatures become equal.
The higher the temperature the faster the particles vibrate and the greater their kinetic energy.
A tub of lukewarm water and a cup of hot tea: the cup has the higher temperature, but the tub holds much more thermal energy because its mass is larger. The temperature measures the average kinetic energy of the molecules (and tells the direction of heat flow: from the higher to the lower), while the thermal energy depends on the number of molecules and their energy together. Molecular physics relates them by \(\overline{KE}=\dfrac32k_BT\) (for an ideal gas, \(T\) in kelvin), i.e. the absolute temperature is proportional to the average kinetic energy.
Two gases in one container: the blue molecules are light (mass \(m\)) and the red ones heavy (mass \(3m\)). Raise the temperature and watch: the speed of the molecules and their kinetic energy increase, and through collisions energy is transferred between molecules until the average kinetic energy of the two gases is equal at the same temperature, so the light ones are faster. Calculate the ratio \(v_{blue}/v_{red}\) and check.

A cup of hot tea and a tub of lukewarm water. Which has the higher temperature and which has the larger thermal energy?
We measure the thermal energy \(Q\) needed to heat a material in simple experiments on water, and conclude three factors:
\[Q=m\,c\,\Delta T\]
\(c\) is the energy needed to raise the temperature of \(1\ \mathrm{kg}\) of the material by one degree. So if a cup of water and a cup of oil (the same mass) are given the same energy, the oil warms faster because its \(c\) is smaller (\(\Delta T=Q/mc\)). Likewise iron warms faster than stone because \(c_{iron}=450\lt c_{stone}\approx840\). (We expand on this in the lesson “Specific Heat Capacity and Phase Changes”.)
Two cups of water of masses \(100\ \mathrm{g}\) and \(200\ \mathrm{g}\) are heated from \(20\) to \(70^\circ\mathrm{C}\). Compare the thermal energies needed.
Calculate the energy needed to raise the temperature of \(0.50\ \mathrm{kg}\) of water from \(20^\circ\mathrm{C}\) to \(60^\circ\mathrm{C}\).
A cup of water and a cup of oil (each of mass \(0.20\ \mathrm{kg}\)) receive \(8000\ \mathrm{J}\) from the stove. Which warms more? Calculate \(\Delta T\) for each.
كأسان A وB.
Two beakers A and B. Choose the liquid in each one and change the mass and the temperature change \(\Delta T\), and watch the height of the bars that represent the thermal energy needed \(Q=mc\Delta T\). Try: two different masses of the same material and the same \(\Delta T\); then different \(\Delta T\); then two different materials (water and oil). Calculate the ratio \(Q_B/Q_A\) and check.

A thermometer is a device that measures the temperature using a physical property that changes with it. Some of its types:

As the temperature rises the mercury expands in the capillary tube.

As the temperature rises the coloured alcohol expands (and it suits very low temperatures because it freezes at a lower temperature).

As the temperature rises the colour of the crystals changes and the visible colour shows the temperature.

An electronic sensor converts the effect of heat into a signal and shows the number equal to the temperature.

It receives the infrared radiation emitted by the body and measures its temperature without contact.
There are three scales: Celsius (°C), Fahrenheit (°F) and the absolute (Kelvin) scale (K). They are defined by two fixed points: the melting of ice and the boiling of water (at atmospheric pressure).
Kelvin |
|---|---|---|---|
Ice melting point | 00 | 3232 | 273273 |
Water boiling point | 100100 | 212212 | 373373 |
Divisions between the two points | 100100 | 180180 | 100100 |
\[T_F=\dfrac95\,T_C+32\qquad T_C=\dfrac59\,(T_F-32)\]
\[T_K=T_C+273\qquad T_C=T_K-273\]
Because there are \(100\) Celsius divisions and \(180\) Fahrenheit divisions between the two points, a change of \(1^\circ\mathrm{C}\) equals a change of \(1\ \mathrm{K}\) and \(1.8^\circ\mathrm{F}\) (so we may use \(\Delta T\) in Celsius or kelvin with the same value in \(Q=mc\Delta T\)). Zero kelvin (\(-273.15^\circ\mathrm{C}\)) is absolute zero: the lowest possible temperature at which the thermal motion of the molecules stops, and there are no negative temperatures on the Kelvin scale. Interestingly \(-40^\circ\mathrm{C}=-40^\circ\mathrm{F}\).
Move the slider to see the same temperature on the three scales: Celsius, Fahrenheit and Kelvin, and notice that a rise of one degree Celsius equals a rise of one kelvin and \(1.8\) degrees Fahrenheit. Then press “New question” and convert the given value and check.
The temperature of a patient is \(40^\circ\mathrm{C}\). What is it in Fahrenheit?

Convert \(68^\circ\mathrm{F}\) to Celsius and then to kelvin.
The normal temperature of the human body is \(37^\circ\mathrm{C}\). Find it in Fahrenheit and in kelvin.

The thermal energy \(Q\) (unit: joule \(\mathrm{J}\)) always flows from the body of higher temperature to the body of lower temperature until their temperatures become equal. It transfers in three ways:
Three identical rods (copper, iron and stone) are each heated at the left end by a flame at \(300^\circ\mathrm{C}\), and each rod carries five wax pieces that melt at \(60^\circ\mathrm{C}\). Press “Start” and watch: the colour of the rod graduates from blue (cold) to red (hot), and the wax pieces melt and fall in order from the nearest to the farthest. The table below the drawing gives the melting time of the first and the last piece for each material: compare them.
