🌡️ Gay-Lussac’s Law
Gay-Lussac’s law (of pressure and temperature): at constant volume the pressure of a given amount of gas is directly proportional to its absolute temperature (in kelvin). That is, if we double the absolute temperature the pressure doubles.
The volume and the amount of gas are constant (a closed rigid container).
(T(\mathrm K)=t(^\circ\mathrm C)+273.15\).The temperature is always in kelvin: \(T(\mathrm K)=t(^\circ\mathrm C)+273.15\).
The pressure is absolute, not the gauge pressure (a tyre gauge reads gauge pressure).
The graph of \(P\) against \(T\) is a straight line passing through the origin.
🧩 Why Does the Pressure Increase When Heated?
According to the kinetic theory a gas consists of molecules in constant random motion, and the pressure results from their collisions with the walls of the container. Raising the temperature increases the average kinetic energy of the molecules so they become faster and hit the walls more often and with a larger force in every collision; since the volume is constant the pressure increases. Lowering the temperature does the opposite.
When \(V\) and \(n\) are constant the quantity \(nR/V\) is constant and it is the slope of the graph of \(P\) against \(T\). So a larger amount of gas gives a larger slope.

🧪 Pressure and Temperature in a Rigid Container
This experiment simulates the GeoGebra applet “Gay-Lussac’s law”: a gas in a container, a pressure gauge that moves when the temperature is raised, and a graph of \(P\) against \(T\).

⚖️ Comparing Two States
In problems we know a first state \((P_1,T_1)\) and want the pressure \(P_2\) at \(T_2\) (or the opposite). We write \(\dfrac{P_1}{T_1}=\dfrac{P_2}{T_2}\) provided that both temperatures are in kelvin, the two pressures are in the same unit and the volume is constant.

Make \(T_2\lt T_1\) (cooling) and notice that the pressure decreases.

🔍 What do we observe?
النسبة \(P_2/P_1\) تساوي دائمًا النسبة \(T_2/T_1\).The ratio \(P_2/P_1\) is always equal to the ratio \(T_2/T_1\).

The air pressure of a car tyre is \(220\ \mathrm{kPa}\) (absolute) at \(20\ ^\circ\mathrm C\). What is its pressure after the temperature rises to \(50\ ^\circ\mathrm C\) (neglecting the change of volume)?
A closed spray can has a gas pressure of \(101\ \mathrm{kPa}\) at \(25\ ^\circ\mathrm C\). At what temperature does its pressure reach \(300\ \mathrm{kPa}\)?
If we plot the pressure against the temperature in Celsius we get a straight line that does not pass through the origin, but if it is extended it cuts the temperature axis at \(-273.15\ ^\circ\mathrm C\) where the pressure vanishes. That is the lowest temperature theoretically possible: absolute zero \(0\ \mathrm K\), from which the kelvin scale starts.

اختر درجة حرارة بالسيلسيوس واضغط «سجّل القياس» (كرّر لأربع درجات على الأقل ومدى \(100\ ^\circ\mathrm C\)).Choose a temperature in Celsius and press “Record the measurement” (repeat for at least four temperatures with a range of \(100\ ^\circ\mathrm C\)).

We measure the pressure of a gas of constant volume at several temperatures in Celsius, then extend the straight line to \(P=0\) to find the temperature at which the pressure vanishes, which is absolute zero.

Using Celsius directly in \(P_1/T_1=P_2/T_2\); it must be converted to kelvin.

Using the gauge pressure instead of the absolute pressure.
Thinking that doubling the Celsius value doubles the pressure (\(20\ ^\circ\mathrm C\) to \(40\ ^\circ\mathrm C\) is not a doubling).
