(Malus's Law): \[I = I_0\cos^2\theta\]
(Brewster's Angle): \[\tan\theta_B=\dfrac{n_2}{n_1}\]

What is polarization? a phenomenon that occurs when light waves oscillate in only one plane (instead of oscillating in every plane perpendicular to the direction of propagation). This only happens for transverse waves, such as electromagnetic waves, and never for longitudinal waves.
Malus's Law: \[I = I_0\cos^2\theta\]
where \(I_0\) is the intensity of the incoming light (after the first filter), \(\theta\) is the angle between the polarization axes (of the first and second filters), and \(I\) is the intensity of the outgoing light (after the second filter).
When does polarization occur?
- Upon reflection off non-metallic surfaces at a specific angle (Brewster's angle)
- When passing through birefringent (double-refracting) materials, such as certain crystals
- When using artificial polarizing filters (Polaroid)
Brewster's Angle: \[\tan\theta_B=\dfrac{n_2}{n_1}\]
where \(\theta_B\) is the angle of incidence at which the reflected light becomes completely polarized, and \(n_1,n_2\) are the refractive indices of the two media (the medium of the incident light and the medium of the reflecting surface).
How do polarizing (Polaroid) filters work? a filter transmits only the component of the light’s electric field that oscillates along the filter’s axis, while absorbing the component perpendicular to that axis. This is why polarized sunglasses use a vertical axis: they block horizontally-polarized light (produced by reflection off horizontal surfaces like water or roads), reducing glare.
Practical applications:
- Polarized sunglasses (reduce glare)
- LCD screens
- Photography (controlling reflections)
- Optical measurements in laboratories
- 3D cinema glasses
